Why Menstrual Cramps During Late Pregnancy Should Not Be Ignored

Menstrual cramps during late pregnancy are a matter of concern for most of the women. But there is no reason to worry about these cramps as you may suffer cramps due to various reasons like digestion problems. But it is advisable to talk to your doctor because in some cases it is a matter of concern. In case of cramps during later pregnancy it is best to talk to your doctor.

Causes of menstrual cramps

  • Round ligament pain

Many a time’s women consider pain in round ligament as menstrual cramps. This ligament is responsible for providing the support to the uterus. These stretch as the size of uterus increases with time. Many women face this issue in second trimester.

  • Constipation

10% to 40% women usually suffer from constipation during pregnancy. Many women suffer from this problem in their later stage of pregnancy. This is because baby occupies the maximum space in womb. The pain during constipation is often similar to menstrual cramps. You may even feel gas problem and nausea.

  • Problems in digestive system

Sometimes the problem in your digestion may also lead to pain similar to menstrual cramps. Stomach flu and gastroenteritis are some of the problems. Even eating too much may lead to pain and cramps. Other reason for this is gallstones which lead to loss in appetite and nausea.

  • Braxton- Hicks Contractions

Braxton-Hicks often occur when uterus has mild contractions. There is nothing wrong with this pain. It occurs as the uterus is preparing for labor. You can get an idea of this pain as it is mild. The time duration of this pain varies from 30 seconds to two minutes.

  • Urinary Tract infection

This infection is very common in pregnant women. The symptoms of this infection are cramps; pain when you pass urine and frequent urge to urinate but only small urine passing. This is often considering somewhat serious problem as it can pass on to other parts like kidney and bladder.

 

Things to do during cramps

Below mentioned are a few things that can be done when you have menstrual cramps

  • Take ample rest during this time
  • Drink plenty water
  • You can have a change like go for a walk or sit down.
  • Take a warm shower
  • For UTI you can drink cranberry juice

Time to see doctor

Sometimes menstrual cramps during late pregnancy can be an indication of some serious problem. Always self diagnosis cannot work. So best thing is talk to your doctor immediately. Only your doctor can tell you best about these pains. He can only tell if pains are really bad fr you and your baby.

See doctor if

  • You feel sudden and severe abdominal pain
  • You feel like symptoms of early labor
  • Urine is smelly along with nausea, vomiting, dizziness or fever.
  • There is less baby movement
  • If you are not feeling well and worried for your condition.
